Soundproofing with Mass Loaded
Vinyl
Mass loaded vinyl is a soundproofing method that has been rated one of the very best for blocking out (or in)
noises in a confined space. Designed to rebound the sound back towards its origination point, this flexible
soundproofing material is almost as good as lead.
To use mass loaded vinyl as a noise barrier on floors, the subfloor is typically sealed with an acoustical
sealant, a metal tape is then used over those gaps as well, then the mass loaded vinyl sheets are laid, followed by
caulking of the seams between the sheets. The foam-backed version is
recommended for flooring as it helps reduce impact noise as well as airborne noise. The foam-backed version
can be used along with the non-foam backed version as well.
To create a sound barrier with your walls, simply attach the foam backed
mass loaded vinyl to the backside of paneling or drywall and use finishing nails to attach to the existing
wall. It’s not necessary to demolish the existing wall to add the soundproof barrier.
Mass loaded vinyl is also paintable. It’s recommended that it be cleaned with alcohol prior to painting
and use only a vinyl or latex paint. There are three types of paintable mass loaded vinyl sheets that are
available, each of a different thickness. Mass loaded vinyl also meets all of the UL requirements for use in
homes and offices, but does not have FAA approval for use in airplanes at this time.
Mass loaded vinyl is so far the best alternative to lead for soundproofing. Prior to the use of lead, egg cartons were used to soundproof
rooms, but this was ineffective as a soundproofing technique. Because the amount of lead necessary to soundproof even a small room is not just difficult to locate, but hazardous to
the health of the occupants, mass loaded vinyl appeared on the market and was immediately adopted by builders and
home owners alike.
Mass loaded vinyl is one of the best materials for musicians. Because it’s easy to install, their studios
can quickly and easily become soundproof, keeping the music in and keeping the outside noise out, leaving them with
only their music to concentrate on fully. Noisy teenagers are a neighbor’s worst nightmare. Mass loaded
vinyl can help with that problem. Simply applying mass loaded vinyl in your home can either keep the noise
in…or keep the noise out, depending which side of the fence you happen to be on!
Because mass loaded vinyl is available for use under flooring, in the ceiling or on the walls, you’re sure to find a version that works perfectly for you. The ease of
installation and care of mass loaded vinyl makes the sound proofing project both easy and effective without the
health hazards and cost of lead. And mass loaded vinyl can be painted with latex or vinyl paint, making
decorating your room after installing the noise barrier a
breeze.
